Back to school installation

 I always like to begin each school year with a collaborative project. This year our students studied muralist Kelsey Montague. Kelsey is famous for her street art, particularly her painting of wings. For our wings, each student designed an individual feather. When all assembled our wings are super eye-catching, everyone has a new favorite selfie spot!

Nesting Dolls

5th grade has been learning about Russian Matryoshka dolls.  For their first assignment students designed a series of four "sisters".  For their second assignment we kicked it up a notch to really challenge ourselves by creating a 3D doll.  Students began the sculpture by taping two balloons to a cardboard base and then covering it in tape to create a smooth silhouette.  After that step was complete we wrapped the entire doll in plaster cloth so that the dolls had a smooth white surface to paint on.  These sculptures were a lot of work and we are still not done painting them but here is what we have so far...

Totem Poles

5th grade just completed a unit on Native American totem poles.  For their first assignment, each student designed one paper totem that was assembled into a pole.  For their second project students carved a pole into balsa foam and added cardboard embellishments.  Designing a totem that looked good in the foam was difficult and carving these was a real challenge to many students, but 3D work is always exciting and a treat.

Perspective Drawing

Every year 5th grade learns about drawing in perspective.  For their first assignment students learn to draw skyscrapers.  In addition to sketching the buildings students were required to add windows and other details.

Haunted Mansions

5th and 6th grade created these silhouettes for Halloween.  Students had to create a house, a landscape and add extra "spooky" elements.  All these pieces were cut out in black paper and glued to a painted ombre background.  Students had a lot of fun with this lesson.
