Back to school installation

 I always like to begin each school year with a collaborative project. This year our students studied muralist Kelsey Montague. Kelsey is famous for her street art, particularly her painting of wings. For our wings, each student designed an individual feather. When all assembled our wings are super eye-catching, everyone has a new favorite selfie spot!

More Stained Glass

6th grade is wrapping up a unit on stained glass.  The last artist we studied was Louis Comfort Tiffany.  Famous for his beautiful lamps and windows, Tiffany often worked with landscapes and nature motifs.  For our project each student received a picture frame.  Students painted a landscape on one side of the plastic that came with the frame.  Once dry, students flipped the image so that the front creates the illusion of shiny glass.  For the last step,  students added puffy paint to simulate lead lines.  The pictures really do not do the work justice, the frames look great and the students were very excited about them!

Stained Glass

6th grade is currently working on a stained glass unit.  Students watched several videos about how stained glass is made and examined examples in churches including Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.  For their first assignment students designed a floral theme faux window.  Students used liquid watercolor to give the impression of vibrant glass and black glue to represent the lead lines.

Woven Paintings

For their final weaving assignment 6th grade students created a woven painting.  Students began the process by drawing one animal and than used carbon paper to make an exact duplicate of the image.  Students then painted both paintings.   They had the choice of painting the two images differently or the same.  Students then cut the papers into warp  and weft strips and wove them together.  This process is challenging!  Paper is much more cumbersome than yarn but can have really incredible results.

Haunted Mansions

5th and 6th grade created these silhouettes for Halloween.  Students had to create a house, a landscape and add extra "spooky" elements.  All these pieces were cut out in black paper and glued to a painted ombre background.  Students had a lot of fun with this lesson.

Pumpkins!

This year students made a variety of  pumpkins for halloweens.

To begin with Pre-K painted their pumpkins orange and added yarn to represent the pulp and some real pumpkin seeds (which everyone was happy to taste!)

3rd grade used the wax resist method to crete these gorgeous batik pumpkins

6th grade worked for hours to create these detailed Zentangle pumpkins
