Back to school installation

 I always like to begin each school year with a collaborative project. This year our students studied muralist Kelsey Montague. Kelsey is famous for her street art, particularly her painting of wings. For our wings, each student designed an individual feather. When all assembled our wings are super eye-catching, everyone has a new favorite selfie spot!

Sewing

My love of Matryoshka dolls has trickled down to third grade.  These little guys learned how to sew their very own doll.  I don't think I have ever had such an enthusiastic class.  Sewing was really a challenge for them; we had plenty of pricked fingers, but everyone finished their doll and the students  were obsessed!  Several have already told me they asked their parents for sewing kits.  The best way to engage a student is to really challenge them and sewing was the proof!!

Mardi Gras!

Third grade has been studying the Mardi Gras festival. We began by reading a great introduction to the festival.  Students designed masks and decorated self portraits with lots of New Orleans flare.

    

Complementary Colors

Every year third grade learns about the 3 sets of complementary colors

Red + Green

Yellow + Purple

Blue + Orange

Students are tasked to design an athlete who wears a uniform in one of these color pairs.  Students used a stencil to trace the athlete's body but did the rest of the details free hand.  I was very impressed with the creativity of kids this year, no one has ever done a swimmer or a boxer before these kiddos!

Illustrating

3rd grade just completed an illustration project.  Students were working on book summaries in their home rooms.  Students brought their homemade books to art where they completed and illustration for each page.  The students were super engaged and the results looked like professional illustrations. Everyone was impressed!

Pumpkins!

This year students made a variety of  pumpkins for halloweens.

To begin with Pre-K painted their pumpkins orange and added yarn to represent the pulp and some real pumpkin seeds (which everyone was happy to taste!)

Kindergarten painted these awesome Jack-O- Lanterns

3rd grade used the wax resist method to crete these gorgeous batik pumpkins

6th grade worked for hours to create these detailed Zentangle pumpkins
