I saw this wonderful lesson on another art blog and I forgot where so I apologize for not giving credit! 8th grade had been learning about Cubism and it's most celebrated artist Pablo Picasso. Picasso would paint portraits of people but would always play with proportion and alignment. As you can see by looking at the following pictures, often facial features are misplaced and faces seem rearanged.
8th grade students tried to create this cubist effect by dividing up and reassembling a playing card. Each student received a face card and then cut it into several shapes and put it together like a puzzle. The results were provocative and stunning.
